Roofing: Not Your Average DIY Project

Custom HomesRoofing isn’t exactly what most people would consider a DIY home improvement project. Roof work is dangerous, hot, sweaty, and exhausting work. Roof replacement can be expensive, so it isn’t something you want to repeat every few years. Do yourself and your home a favor by hiring an experienced, certified company to do the job right the first time.

A typical roof with traditional shingles will last for 15 to 20 years under normal circumstances. High winds, tropical storms, hurricanes, and severe thunderstorms may make it necessary to repair or replace your roof more frequently. A damaged roof leads to structural instability of the entire home.

Don’t Settle for Normal

The roof is the second-most replaced exterior component of a home; the first is the siding. Before you replace your roof with the same type of traditional shingles, consider some other roofing materials. In fact, while replacing your roof, consider replacing your siding as well, for a complete facelift for your home.

Shingles are available in a variety of colors and materials. Consider each of them before making your final decision. Here are several other options that you may not even know exist:

Wood Shingle: Wood shingles are cut from bolts of wood such as red cedar. Most types of wood shingles have a life expectancy of about 30 years.

Slate: Slate looks absolutely amazing as roofing material. The life expectancy is an incredible 80 to 400 years, because it is literally stone. The initial cost of a slate roof is very expensive.

Asphalt Shingle: Most shingles are asphalt. They’re made in bulk and cheaper than both wood and slate.

Rubber Shingle: Rubber shingles last about 50 years on average. They’re durable, and recyclable. Most are recycled from tire rubber.

Metal Roofing: Corrugated galvanized iron, galvanized steel, and copper are very popular materials for roofing. Custom copper roofing adds a timeless beauty to your home. It is more expensive than shingles, but adds a lot of value to your home.

Solar Shingles: Solar shingles provide a dual purpose. They help reduce energy costs while performing the job of roof covering perfectly. They can be a bit expensive, but should be looked at as an investment instead of a simple home improvement project.
